Synopsis

The crew's drinking at the Oasis Bar when tempers rise. Telemachus Rhade believes Seamus Harper's inflating the bill, Beka Valentine's sick of his grousing and drinking, Harper wants them to take it outside, and Doyle takes offense when Beka says Doyle whines about not being real. The whole thing dissolves into a bar fight. Finally fed up, Harper takes a large gun and fires a shot into the ceiling. The fight ends as everyone laughs at Harper getting covered with plaster. Their venting has released their pent-up pressures, and relax. Rhade doesn't notice Trance Gemini coming in and she hears him apparently blaming her for their situation. Doyle tries to stop her, but Trance is verbally wounded by his words. She returns to Andromeda Ascendant where she says goodbye to Dylan Hunt and disappears. Dylan confronts Doyle outside the bar to find out what happened, they leave to search for Trance in the tunnels.

Feeling her friends’ plight rests firmly on her shoulders but with no memory why, Trance is crying, deep within the tunnel system when she's found by a man named Orlund. As he approaches her, he covers a High Guard patch on his clothes and lowers the strange weapon he carries. He says he maintains these tunnels and offers to guide her through safely. As they round a bend, he pulls her against the wall, just in time as a weapon's fired from the shadows. Several tunnel dwellers charge them, but when Orlund fires his weapon, they're paralysed with fear. As each body hits the ground, Trance asks about his long silver rifle, which she realizes must be Vedran. He tells her he inherited the job of protecting this and other hidden technology before leading her to the Vedran Portal Chamber , which holds 9 doors with small cradles next to each. A chest filled with Methus crystals sits in the center of the room; they're the keys to the doors, the tesseract portals to each planet in the system. He's used the doors to gain access to the many secrets the Vedrans left behind but he appears guilty about something. He shows her the High Guard patch he wears, but before saying more about things he's done which might anger the Vedrans, an alarm beeps. He leads her through the Seefra-2 door and leaves her, while he checks on his trap.

He finds Dylan and Doyle and approaches them like a tunnel dweller until he's close enough to fire his weapon. He fires at Dylan, who writhes in pain but doesn't fall. Orlund's surprised, as only the Paradine, those of Vedran descent, would be unharmed by the device. While Dylan's till paralyzed, Orlund tries the weapon @ Doyle who slumps against the wall, but isn't unaffected as she's an Android. He binds them both and leads them away, as Dylan quietly tells Doyle to play along to see what they can learn.

Orlund leads them to the same chamber but takes them through the Seefra-5 door into a room packed with crates. When they try to question him, he tells them they must be hidden away so they cannot tell any other Paradine about him. When they tell him they're pastr of the vanguard, and more are on the way. As he locks them in, he tells them he has a guest waiting for him. Guessing the guest's probably Trance, Doyle tries to unlock the door while Dylan looks for a place to sit, but the crates are extremely hot. They find charged quartz crystals inside heating up. They also find many furs and carvings and piles of money. It’s exactly the type of hoarding the Vedrans didn’t do, and the type of wealth Seefrans can’t amass. The situation's growing desperate as the temperature continues to rise. Dylan finds a trap door under a rug. As Doyle comes to look, they see the box of quartz glow bright when she approaches, giving Dylan an idea. If the electromagnetic energy she emits affects the crystals, they can tweak her settings in order to manipulate the door’s magnetic lock. She dials up her output (which results in a previously unknown side effect) and places her hand on the door, opening the lock.

Orlund has Trance tied up, believing her to have led Dylan and Doyle to punish him for invading the Vedran’s lair. He drags her through the door to Seefra-2, taking the Seefra-1 crystal with him. Shattering it will destroy all the chambers on the different planets and hide him from him being followed. Trance begs him to stop, knowing the destruction of the crystal will mean destruction of all the planets, as well. He ignores her and smashes the crystal down creating a deafening noise which shakes the tunnels. Dylan and Doyle emerge from underground on Seefra-5. They overhear reports of earthquakes on Seefra-1 and understand what's happening. Orlund thinks he's only destroying a key when it's the crystal which hold the programming for the entire planet. Using the charged quartz to boost Doyle's power, they open the tesseract door and plunge through the portal, interrupting Orlund, who's shocked by their arrival. They try to explain, but he won't listen.. Swept up in his own delusions he launches into a diatribe against those who don’t appreciate his work in the tunnels. As he lifts the crystal, Trance tries to tear the rifle off him. They struggle until Trance realizes he's letting her win. He wants her to kill him, and put him out of his misery. He admits to using the Vedran technology for his own gains. Dylan gets an idea and pushes back Orlund’s cloak, revealing his High Guard insignia. Invoking his position as a High Guard captain, he gives Orlund the praise he never received, and orders him to stay - guarding these secret chambers. Recognized at last, Orlund salutes him and agrees.

When the crew is back aboard Andromeda, Dylan doles out back pay donated from Orlund’s stockpiles. He also donated all the charged quartz, which was enough to bring Andromeda up to 70 percent power. The crew, reunited in a way they’ve missed since arriving in Seefra, a step closer to their possible escape.
