Overview

The original soundtrack of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is composed by two artists. The Season 1 opening theme, also known as the High Guard March Theme, is composed and performed by Alex Lifeson and the rest of the TV score is composed by Matthew McCauley.

Instrumentation

With the exceptions of the "High Guard March", which is an electric guitar track, the soundtrack is primarily comprised of orchestral music with a delicate touch of electronic and synthetic textures. Instruments used are those of a standard full sized orchestra, which is comprised of Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, and Standard Orchestral Percussion such as snares, timpani, and cymbals. However due to budget concerns and other limitations, the album is primarily performed by Synthesizers that sounds similar to an orchestra, although there is one specific track that is performed by a live orchestra called "the High Guard Theme", also known as the Season 2 main title.

Changing of main themes

After abandoning the Season 1 title theme (which was never to be heard again), the "High Guard Theme", sometimes referred to as "Andromeda Invitcus", becomes the series main opening title music for the rest of the remaining seasons. Despite being welcomed by some, the decision to abandon the Season 1 opening music has also received critical responses from fans.

Cues

Like most TV and film soundtracks, several different cues have been combined into one track. Because the soundtrack was released during 2002, the album is only comprised of cues from Season 1 and Season 2, therefore music from Season 3, 4, and 5 are not included in the album.

The Arkology Theme

In the fan community, many have requested the well-known Arkology Theme from the Season 4 finale. Unfortunately, as of 2008, the cue is unavailable for purchase by the public.

Awards

Matthew McCauley was awarded the Leo Award for best Musical score of a Dramatic series for the episode "Music Of A Distant Drum" in 2001.
